PEN/Faulkner Writers in Schools is a literary arts outreach program committed to developing the next generation of readers. Since 1989, Writers in Schools has brought nationally-known writers into urban public high schools. PEN/Faulkner provides free copies of an author’s book to students, along with resources to aid teachers in preparing students for the author’s visit. The teacher and author work together to create visits that are meaningful, rich, and authentic experiences for the class involved.
- PEN/Faulkner’s Writers in Schools program takes place in eight wards of the District of Columbia, in public and public charter high schools.
- In 2008 – 2009, Writers in Schools worked with 25 teachers in 21 schools to reach roughly 1,000 students a year.
- Writers in Schools offers teachers the opportunity to exchange best practices during professional development sessions hosted by PEN/Faulkner.
- The dedication of writers and teachers year after year is testament to their belief in the Writers in Schools Program.
"You coming to visit us on Friday meant so much to me. I too am a person who wants to become a lawyer and a writer. I have been writing poetry since I could talk. Your story inspired me and made me think of how I could relate to people with my poetry. You also helped me realize that anyone can be more than one thing in life. I didn’t believe in myself until now. Thanks for being my inspiration.
